Jan just returned from a whirlwind trip to Kenya with her friend and fellow artist Sue Gombus. Sue is a teacher in Chicago and came up with the idea of putting together a calendar to raise money for the MUTINDA NATURE CENTER in Kangundo, Kenya. This nature center was built by Jan's guide Preston Mutinda to teach the area youth the importance of conserving wildlife. The kids drew pictures of African animals which Sue then brought back to the U.S. When school starts this year she will have her students from the inner city school where she teaches do some writing for each animal. These will then be made into a calendar that will be sold to raise money for the Nature Center. Jan had a great time helping Sue with this project. Here you can see Jan giving a drawing lesson. Jan and James had the pleasure to spend some time with Anna Merz while they were at LEWA. Anna is the reason that the black rhino has been saved from the brink of extinction. She is to Black Rhinos what Jane Goodall is to chimps, and Diane Fosey was to Mountain Gorillas. After retiring to Kenya in 1983 when she was in her sixties she became concerned about the rhino's plight. She approached the Craig family who own Lewa and ran it as a cattle farm, and asked them if they would consider turning a corner of it into a sanctuary for Black Rhino. Now, the entire 62,000 acre ranch is a wildlife preserve. There are currently 64 black rhino - 10 percent of the population in Kenya! Anna currently lives in South Africa and only comes to Lewa twice a year so Jan and James were very excited that the was there when they were. She is the author of RHINO AT THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION. Here is a recent magazine article on her: PINK magazine: The Rhino Lady of Limpopo Providence. |

Jan is pictured with Cindy Bray of Barking Dog Design and Barbara Herren from Tri County Technology Center with a life size fiberglass bison that Jan has agreed to paint as part of a project called "Buffalo Stampede" in Bartlesville. Fifteen businesses and individuals have sponsored a bison. A large portion of the proceeds will go to help Mary Martha Outreach Center www.marymarthaoutreach.com. The idea was conceived by a girl scout troop working on their gold badges. They wanted to do something for the community and the arts and so came up with this idea. Tri County Tech is the sponsor of Jan's bison - as their mascot is a bison. The bisons will be painted by area artists and installed all over Bartlesville and the surrounding area. Jan (being a naturalist and realistic painter) is planning on painting her bison's front end "realistically" and then each side of the bison will have scenes of the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve (20 minutes from Bartlesville) with herds of bison. Jan uses a special brand of Acrylic called Chromocolour which is manufactured in Canada. Chromacolour has graciously agreed to provide all the paint for Jan for this project free of charge. During Jan and James' 2008 wonderful trip to Yellowstone they saw four wolves (two black and two grey) on an elk kill which was close to the road. The next day while driving they saw one of the wolves that they recognized from the kill several miles away on the other side of a lake. It was trotting purposefully in the direction of the kill. Surmising that the wolf was returning to the kill, Jan suggested that they drive a little ways down the road, where they then parked and hiked down a small hill and then sat waiting. Sure enough within 15 minutes the wolf passed on its way to the kill. Here you can see the wolf checking James out. After deciding they were no threat, he continued on his way to the kill. |

Jan and James had their first exhibition together of Jan's paintings and James' photos at a fund raising event and party called COW THIEVES AND OUTLAWS for Woolaroc Museum. This was the first time that James has displayed his photographs (seen on the left part of the display). The event was very successful with James selling three of his large photographs and Jan selling two paintings and getting a commission. All told they expect to have generated over $3500 for the museum. Woolaroc has many historical western and native American artifacts, and a spectacular art collection of names such as Remington, Russell, Leigh, Rungius and more. |

The Cultural Heritage Centre is an institution in Arusha. Featured in the movie Hatari in the 1960s it has since moved from the center of town to its current premises and is the biggest African art outlet in the whole of Africa. The Centre personally hosted a visit by then American president Bill Clinton and his daughter Chelsea during a visit in 2000. Nearing completion is Cultural Heritage Centers new art gallery. Built in the shape of an African drum in the shadow of a shield, this enormous edifice is destined to be one of the finest showcases for African art the world has ever seen. Saif Khanbhai, the owner, was introduced to Jan and James by the owner of SAFARI LEGACY, the company that they traveled with recently in Tanzania. Saif immediately ordered one of all of Jan's African subject giclees - 32 in all, for his new gallery. Jan and fellow artist John Banovich are the only American Artists that the gallery represents. |

Jan has been honored to be selected by Safari Club International as their Conservation Artist of the Year for 2008. Jan has donated this painting - SIMBA SHADOWS to be auctioned at SCI's convention January 23-26, 2008. 100% of this donation will fund the SCI Foundation's Conservation Database Project which funds existing and new wildlife projects in Asia, Africa and North America. A limited edition giclée print will be made and will be rewarded to SCI chapters' conservation efforts. Hunters are responsible for a large percentage of the money generated for conservation projects through their fees, licenses and other related expenses - particularly in countries such as Africa. John Banovich initiated the program last year with his Conservation Alliance project. SIMBA SHADOWS regular edition will be available through select SCI chapter fund raising events in 2008. The artist proof edition of 12 is available from Jan now. For more information go to the Prints/poster/books button and click on giclées. |
